Last Days at the Gambier Road Market Pt. 12

Dock Lane was a narrow laneway between the Brooke Dockyards and the two rows of shophouses on Jalan Market and Ban Hock Wharf where stallholders began selling their wares. It eventually became a covered walkway lined with compact shops packed to the rafters with various and sundry goods; it has now been dismantled.

Two neighbouring stallholders reminisce about old times. "We've been friends for thirty years," they said. The gentleman on the right told me that he'd had a stall here since the 1970s, and grew his business from this location to several others around the city.
